Re-entry responses

How will the typical returnee respond to the challenges of return and re-entry? In her book Looking Forward, Looking Backward, Jacque Behrens identifies four common categories of responses:

  • Some returnees will “re-socialize” by rejecting and removing themselves from their foreign experience.

  • Some returnees may reject their home culture and consequently fail to continue to grow from the overseas experience.

  • The rebellious returnee reacts to the home culture by trying to control and change it in unrealistic ways.

  • A proactive individual grows from the international experience even after returning home, and maximizes their learning and impact opportunities.
