Dealing with Expectations: Employer

Many returning students consider different work place expectations one of the greatest challenges in adjusting to life back home.

A North African returnee said, “I found that people I knew in the U.S. were motivated to work. In my country they work to live. American scientists are willing to exchange facts and information about their work. In my country workers are suspicious of one another. There is a lack of mutual respect and cooperation, and they don’t want to change.”

This real life experience illustrates the potential for many such struggles facing returnees in career and work settings.
